Cumbria police employ Grizzly to ward of thieves

Cumbria Police have welcomed a new addition to their Farmwatch team – a Yamaha Grizzly 550 EPS. Throughout the summer the Yamaha ATV will be touring Cumbria warding off rural criminals and raising the awareness of security considerations for large estates.

By adding the Grizzly to their ranks Cumbria police have adopted a professional workhorse which is comfortable on the very toughest rural terrain in Cumbria, something which it proved during its work on Lambing Live which also featured a Grizzly 550 EPS. Rural thieves will be thinking twice about targets in Cumbria as the Farmwatch scheme, which the Grizzly is promoting, provides an excellent network of communication between farmers as PCSO Reece Watt explains:

“The Farmwatch scheme is a valuable tool to help get crime prevention messages across to rural areas. It can also be a forum for members to discuss concerns they may have. The more people who join, the more impact this will have in preventing crime and catching criminals.” – PCSO Reece Watt

Farmwatch helps to combat rural crime by improving communication between the farming community and the police. It is great way for farmers to improve the safety of their property and equipment on the farm.

Cumbria Police will be displaying the Grizzly in an effort to highlight the importance of securing all vehicles and property in the rural environment. By working with farmers and the community Cumbria police are keen to ensure that everything is being done to protect farms across Cumbria.

The Cumbria Police Grizzly will be prowling around several local events throughout the summer and has already been on show at the opening of the new NFU Mutual building in Penrith where it was joined by the Marston family of BBC 2’s Lambing Live. Rural crime in Cumbria is up 14% compared to the same time period last year so the Cumbrian Police are keen for farmers join the Farmwatch scheme which is free to sign up to and can be accessed through the following site: http://www.cumbriafarmwatch.co.uk/ By joining the Farmwatch scheme you agree to receive information by phone, text or email.

Farmers will also receive free crime prevention advice on protecting your property and reduced cost (or sometimes free) security products. By keeping you informed about crime in your area, Farmwatch helps prevent crime, keep the community safe and sometimes catch criminals.
